Dog-loving volunteer reunites canine companions who used to spend time in kennels together

A DOG-loving volunteer has reunited two pups who used to spend their days in kennels playing together.

Christine McCabe from Alcester has been a volunteer at the Dogs Trust in Kenilworth for two years. She already owns a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross Hayden, but after months of volunteering and feeling ready for a second dog, she met Jack, a Jack Russell Terrier who she knew would fit in perfectly in her home.

Jack used to spend his days playing in the paddocks with his kennel neighbour Pete the Lurcher, and Christine enjoyed hearing about how happy they made one another, chasing each other around before going back to their kennels for an afternoon nap.

She said: “I’d have loved to have adopted Pete, but at the time, we knew we couldn’t have offered him what he needed and we weren’t sure how Hayden would have coped.

“When I saw Jack, I just knew his temperament would be great for us, and both he and Hayden got along so well, I knew we’d made the right decision.”

Christine volunteered every week and each time saw Pete was still waiting for a home.

He had been in kennels for more than two years and had little interest.

She added: “I used to walk with Pete and remember the fun he used to have with Jack.

“A few months went by and after chatting to the team we decided that we could give Pete the home he needed. He’d been in kennels a little while and really deserved a home of his own.

“Pete has now been living with us for three months and they are all the best of friends. It was the best decision we ever made. We’ve just taken the dogs away on their first holiday in our motorhome so Pete had his first beach experience and loved it.”

And staff at the rehoming centre are just as delighted that the canine companions have been reunited.

Centre manager Emma Healey said: “It’s wonderful Christine has been able to offer both Jack and Pete a home and to see them enjoying each other’s company once again is fantastic.

“We still have lots of other dogs of all shapes and sizes still waiting to be adopted, so if you’re looking to add a four-legged friend to your home, please do come along and see us.”
