Engineer says number of women in profession has increased since she was a student

AN ENGINEER says the number of women taking up the profession has increased from when she was a student.

Rozie Harris from Stratford graduated from Coventry University in 2011 when there were no girls on her course.

She then went to work for Jaguar Land Rover in Gaydon before joining contractor Fusion last year, where she is a senior project engineer for HS2.

Since then the 30-year-old has noticed a huge rise in the number of female engineers.

Rozie – who is currently working from home due to the pandemic – said: “My obsession with engineering started at a young age and is all down to my dad. He worked as a civil engineer and I remember spending one Christmas watching him install a new bridge for the Cross City Line near Selly Oak. I was completely awestruck.

“Once I had my heart set on becoming an engineer it was just about finding the right path to get there. I completed a foundation year in engineering at Coventry University before moving on to a degree in Automotive Engineering Design. I was the only girl on the course, which didn’t really surprise me, but it’s great to see that things are changing.

“I’ve been with Fusion for just under a year now and it’s been amazing to be part of the team delivering HS2. I was immediately struck by the number of female employees – it’s a far cry from my student days.

“Engineering is such a diverse career and I would encourage women who may be wondering what path to follow, or whether it’s time for a change, to explore the opportunities available.”
