England coaches back Cleary's boxers

Leamington Editorial 12th Feb, 2017   0

ENGLAND coaches have given their backing to a Leamington boxing gym threatened with closure.

Mick Driscoll and Ben Stewart, who travel the country in search of up and coming talent, pledged their support to Cleary’s Boxing Gym, which faces uncertain times as their current home is set to be converted into student housing.

The Wise Terrace venue attracts 130 boxers through its doors each week – including rising talents Lewis Williams, Danny Quartermaine and Morgan Answell.

Owner Edwin Cleary continues to hunt for a new to continue the club’s work.

He said: “To have theses two very busy coaches pop in to Cleary’s shows the level of boxer we are now producing.

“They came to observe our boxers training habits, our coaches techniques and talk about where our boxers are going as well as what events are coming up in the year.

“We are starting to get the help we need. It seems the council are now aware of the gym’s plight, and we had a very productive meeting with MP Chris White.”

Though the future looks brighter for, Edwin stressed the job in finding a new facility was not over.

He added: “If there’s anyone out there who can help us or has any ideas then we’d love to hear from you.

“I don’t want to leave this to chance.”

Both Mick and Ben have already promised to return to Cleary’s in the coming months to monitor the young boxers.
