A BUDDING photographer has been commended in the RSPCA’s Young Photographer Awards.
Owen Gee from Leamington captured a hummingbird hawkmoth in flight while on holiday in Corfu and submitted the photograph, which he titled ‘draw the long straw’, to the national competition.
The 17 year-old said: “This hummingbird hawk-moth was in our garden on holiday. They don’t keep still as they don’t land on the flowers, so it took lots of patience and failed attempts to eventually capture this stunning insect.”
Attracting entries from youngsters aged up to 18 from across England and Wales, this year’s RSPCA Young Photographer Awards were judged by a panel of experts in wildlife photography led by Springwatch presenter Chris Packham.
Head judge Chris added: “The competition was very strong this year and all the finalists should be very proud of their work. The pictures that were chosen were fantastic and we had tough decisions to make.”
