Former RAF airbase commemorated with statue

Leamington Editorial 13th Nov, 2019   0

A FORMER RAF airbase in Southam has been commemorated with a new statue.

The Flying Fields housing development was the site of a training base for pilots during the Second World War.

To commemorate the site’s history a statue was unveiled on Remembrance Day and wreaths laid at its base. Guests included Southam mayor Mike Brooks, members of the 2028 Southam Squadron AirTraining Corps and the Leamington and Warwick branch of the Royal Air Force Association.

Flt Lt Daryll Moreton of the Southam Royal Air Force Air Cadets said: “It was a privilege to witness the unveiling of the new statue at the Flying Fields development. It marked a poignant moment in the history of the site and reminds us of the important role played by the service people who were stationed at RAF Southam during the war.”

The site was used as a training ground from 1940 until 1944 when flying there stopped due to a decline in demand for pilots. It was then used as a storage base for equipment.

The buildings were demolished in the late 1990s before planning permission for the Taylor Wimpey Flying Fields development was granted in 2018.
