Former RAF pilot receives flying visit from Lancaster Bomber

A FORMER RAF pilot received a flying visit from a Lancaster Bomber at his Leamington care home.

Owen Scott who is a resident at Priors House, was treated to the flyover by daughters Nicky and Toni to celebrate 100 years of the RAF.

They arranged the surprise for the 96-year-old who was called up to serve in the Second World War when he was 21.

After training in Florida for a year, Owen earned his wings and became Flight Lt Owen Scott DFC and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944.

The pilot served in the RAF for three years – taking part in over 30 missions and flying 27 different aircrafts.

Owen recorded his RAF experiences on a number of CDs and took part in a BBC film.

The RAF was where Owen met his late wife of 73 years, Nan, who he moved to Priors House to be with.

He often recalls flying over her place of work as a way of saying hello after they first began seeing each other.

Owen was joined by family, residents and staff to await the highly-anticipated arrival which brought cheers and laughter and prompted memories of life during the war.

Homer manager Francine Summers said: “Reminiscence is incredibly important for older people, and this was the perfect occasion for residents to remember their younger years.

“Owen sometimes has difficulty remembering day-to-day activities, however he has had no trouble remembering the flyover and his excitement lasted for days – he’s still talking about the flyover now.

“Thank you to Nicky and Toni for helping us organise such a special day for the residents.”
