Foundation's plea for help to support vulnerable people

VULNERABLE people will receive some extra support this Christmas.

The Heart of England Community Foundation has launched its ‘Surviving Winter’ appeal to help those across Coventry and Warwickshire who are suffering homelessness, food poverty and social isolation.

The foundation is looking for donations from businesses, individuals and residents who are able to donate some or all of their winter fuel allowance.

People are also being asked to hold fund-raisers such as bake sales, quizzes and raffles to help support the campaign.

Money raised will fund community projects which help vulnerable people.

Since the campaign was launched in 2011, it has supported more than 80,000 through the difficult winter months.

Chief executive of the foundation, Tina Costello, said: “Winter is one of the hardest times of the year for vulnerable people, and the appeal goes a long way in supporting those who need it most.

“The causes we have chosen to support help thousands of people from across the area.

“In the West Midlands it is estimated that 60,000 older people live in social isolation, more than 103,000 emergency food parcels were requested in the last year and the number of rough sleepers has increased 37 per cent since 2010.

“These statistics demonstrate how vital the Surviving Winter appeal is, and the funds raised will go to organisations at the forefront of tackling these issues.”
