Fun and games in Barford

Leamington Editorial 26th Jan, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

WORK to build new sports and play facilities in Barford is well underway.

A new children’s play area, a multi-use games area including two tennis courts and an all-weather court and a perimeter path are all taking shape at King George’s Field – thanks to £450,000 being raised in just 18 months.

A new store and toilet facilities are also in place, and once complete, the site will also feature new benches and a picnic area.

The working group, which was formed to raise the money, has not rested on its laurels and raised a further £30,000 in December. A grant of £10,000 has been received from Garfield Weston Foundation and £20,000 from Warwick-based National Grid. These extra cash will be used to install outdoor gym equipment on the playing field.

Mark Griffin, leader of the working group, said: “We are enormously grateful to both Garfield Weston Foundation and National Grid for their significant contributions towards our project.

“Like many, they believe in the community benefits this project will bring and with their support we are on track to develop an outstanding asset for the local community.

“Despite the recent very wet weather, we are delighted with progress and, given this, we are already looking at forming a range of sports clubs which will benefit locals of all ages.”

A celebration day is planned on Sunday May 1. Visit www.barfordplayingfields.org for further details.
