Further consultation to be held on future of Newbold Comyn

Leamington Editorial 23rd Aug, 2019   0

FURTHER consultation is set to be held on the future of Leamington’s Newbold Comyn.

Warwick District Council launched a public consultation last summer on the way forward for the 300-acre country park following the closure of the 18 hole golf course at the end of 2017.

Three masterplan proposals were drawn up following the consultation including a redesigned par-3 golf course, driving range, re-opening the pitch and putt course, an adventure play area with ropes, zip wires and climbing, an extension to the Leam Valley nature reserve, 3G artificial pitch, and visitor centre and cafe.

Two of the options include no golf facilities, with one including a larger extension to the nature reserve.

Residents will now be asked for their views on the three masterplans during another consultation, opening shortly and running until around the end of October.

A cross-party group will then look to agree a final proposal by January, with the aim of getting council approval by the spring.

District neighbourhood services spokesman Coun David Norris said: “Newbold Comyn is a treasured green space in Leamington that residents across the district come to enjoy.

“Our aim here is to ensure that we preserve and enhance this area so that it can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people for many years to come.”

The 45-year-old golf course closed at the end of 2017 after former management company Mack Golf withdrew from its contract. An 18 hole course is no longer economically viable.

Council chiefs have ruled out any sort of housing development at the popular park.
