Future looking brighter for airfield after new building plans approved

THE FUTURE is looking brighter for Wellesbourne Airfield after plans were approved for a new hangar and clubhouse for a flying school on the site.

Stratford District Council (SDC) has given permission to Take Flight Aviation for the new buildings after its former hanger was demolished having been badly damaged during a storm.

The clubhouse will be located above the hangar and will include a balcony overlooking the airfield.

The council is currently making a compulsory purchase of the site to prevent the owners – Littler Investments – from selling the land to developers.

The airfield is home to businesses including other flying schools and a cafe which – despite the purchase – are fighting for their tenancies to be renewed.

They are waiting to hear the results of an appeal launched after a judge ruled in favour of the landlord’s decision not to renew the leases.

The decision is expected in around a month’s time.

If the businesses lose the appeal, they will have three months to leave the site.

But Take Flight owner Mike Roberts remains positive about the future of the airfield.

He said: “We have outgrown our current facility and wish to work with forward thinking landlords in the future to expand our premises and are hoping to work with SDC after the compulsory purchase of the airfield has taken.”
