'Golden Girls' receive long service award after being members of WI for 50 years each

Leamington Editorial 9th Dec, 2020   0

THREE ‘Golden Girls’ have received long service awards after each being members of the WI for 50 years.

Pam Cook, Margaret Freeman and Pat Tarver of Newbold Pacey and Ashorne WI were presented on their doorsteps with a certificate and a Warwickshire Federation silver honeysuckle brooch.

Pat Tarver joined the WI in 1955 to meet other new mothers.

She was left-handed and convinced she couldn’t knit, but eventually mastered the skill thanks to tuition from fellow-member and vicar’s wife, Mrs Bluck.

She now knits premature babywear for Warwick Hospital and specialises in knitted nativity sets

And fellow member Pam Cook is known for baking and flower-arrangements. She has held many WI committee positions and is currently group representative.

Margaret Freeman, a keen cook and flower arranger says one of her fondest memories is members taking their children to Oakley Wood on summer days for picnics.

She also thanked the committee for working hard to ensure members stay in touch throughout the pandemic.

President Trish Handsley said: “These three ladies joined WI as young mums but they’re now our esteemed elders.

“They have more than 150 years of WI knowledge and experience and we’re really proud of them. Our members are aged from 29 to 89 but we all love learning new skills, supporting our local community, speaking out on issues that mean a lot to us, making new friends and eating great cake.

“We enjoy welcoming new members and everyone’s looking forward to 2021 and the post-covid opportunities it will bring.”
