Half marathon goes plastic free

Leamington Editorial 28th May, 2018   0

ECO-friendly runners taking part in Leamington’s first half marathon will be going plastic free.

The event on Sunday July 1 will be raising money for charity Kids Run Free.

And to put a stop to the amount of single-use plastic commonly found at race events, ‘Plastic Free Community’ leader Jo Lally – who is aiming to reduce plastic use in Warwick and Leamington – has been working with organisers Raceways.

Plastic bottles and cups will be replaced with paper cups. The plastic goodie bags which are usually given to runners will also be swapped for paper or cotton bags.

Jo, who will also be running in the event, said: “It’s a big commitment from the team at Raceways and pioneering the way for others to follow. Having run in many events there is always a huge amount of unnecessary single use plastic items which is upsetting.

“The agreement means the elimination of thousands of single use plastic items being used and gifted at the event. This is a massive win for our community and the environment and we are grateful to the team for their care and willingness to do the right thing.

“We hope this will pave the way for others, helping businesses, event organisers and individuals to see what is possible and we believe it will put Leamington and the half marathon firmly on the map.”
