HELP is at hand in Warwickshire for adults who struggle to read.
The adult literacy charity Read Easy Mid Warwickshire was set up earlier this year and provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching for adults in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.
Read Easy Mid Warwickshire is asking anyone who knows someone who cannot read to make a call which could change their lives. Coaches and readers meet twice a week at approved local venues to work for just half an hour at a time through a structured, phonics-based reading programme – the same programme which helped The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades to read.
Team leader Vicky Fletcher said: “We want to help more adults in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth who need reading support. We’re passionate about transforming more lives in the community through our proven reading programme.
“People should not feel embarrassed about coming forward. There can be many reasons why someone didn’t learn to read in childhood. For some it may have been a lack of support from their own family or school, for others it may have been undiagnosed dyslexia.”
It is estimated that 2.4million adults in England struggle to read, including approximately 10,000 in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth. This means that carrying out everyday tasks, such as reading road signs or doing the food shopping, can be incredibly challenging.
Many people who cannot read have never been to the doctor as they’re too embarrassed to have to read and fill in forms. Being unable to read and write is often associated with depression, isolation and even higher mortality.
