FOR the first time in the town’s history the mayor of Leamington has been elected to stand for a second year.
Due to the pandemic Coun Susan Rasmussen was chosen at an online ceremony by town councillors to stand as mayor again for the next year.
Coun Rasmussen said: “I will be the first mayor in Leamington’s history to be elected to stand for a second consecutive year,
“I little imagined this time last year that I would be again elected mayor during an online ceremony, but so little of what has happened in the past 12 months could have been imagined.
“For a brief glorious period last summer things started to relax. Everyone’s mood lifted. I was able to enjoy performing a few duties and attend some events as mayor. One highlight was the civic service held in All Saints’ Church in October, but over the winter things came to a halt again. I particularly regretted not being able to hold fundraising events for my charities. “Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and Motionhouse are perhaps not ‘the usual suspects’ but are in their own way vital parts of our lives. One is devoted to conserving and enhancing the natural environment on which we all depend, and the other is a real force in the cultural life of Leamington. We are so much richer as a community when the arts are flourishing. Do look out for exciting events when I will be supporting both organisations.
“You will all have heard a multitude of different examples of how Leamington has risen to the challenge of a pandemic – of volunteers, of communities, and of people working way above and beyond what might be expected. Each story reinforces what previous mayors have said to me – there are more good people doing good things in this town than can easily be imagined. I really look forward to meeting many of you, and celebrating with you the life of our wonderful town.”
