Home Guard plan to build flats above clubhouse

BAR owners are hoping to build flats above their clubhouse in a bid to protect its future.

Number 4 Portland Street is owned by Leamington Home Guard Club who have run the building since 1946.`

But while the club is in the regular use – including by bowls, snooker and dominoes teams – the top two floors of the building are virtually unused.

Members now hope to turn the upper floors into four one-bedroom flats, which would be accessible by the back of the property.

Club secretary Ian Barrett said: “As the years have passed the fabric of our club has deteriorated and is now need of serious investment to restore it to its former glory.

“The two top floors of the building are practically unused and form a valuable potential asset which could be the basis to provide a source of income that would enable us to fulfil our duty of care, to perpetuate and safeguard an important part of the Leamington past and to continue to make a real contribution to the community in the future.”
