Horror as knife is found in social services toy box

Leamington Editorial 22nd Jun, 2017   0

A HORRIFIED mum has hit out at social services after she found a knife in a toy box.

The young mum from Warwick – who did not wish to be named – was attending a meeting with Warwick Children’s Services at the Myton Park Centre on Myton Lane.

To keep her two young children entertained while she spoke to the social worker, staff brought a box full of toys into the room. It had originally been in the waiting area.

And while putting the teddies and games back the mum was horrified to discover a dinner knife among the toys.

She said: “”Although it was only a dinner knife, my children are very young and could have easily found it and and hurt themselves or each other with it.”

The mum – who plans to put in a complaint about the incident – said a social worker quickly took the knife off her and ‘whisked it behind her back’, muttering that it should not have been there.

And Warwickshire County Council have said they are investigating how the knife came to be in the box.

A spokesman told the Observer: “We were made aware that a small domestic dinner knife had been retrieved from a children’s toy box by a concerned parent.

“Clearly we would not place such an object in a children’s toy box, so we are reviewing our processes and will be ensuring that regular checks are made.

“Keeping children safe is everybody’s responsibility, and we are grateful to the parent for handing the item in.

“We’re investigating at the moment but at this point it’s not possible to say for certain how the knife got there.”
