Households urged to cut waste and earn rewards

HOUSEHOLDERS in the district are being urged to go on a green diet.

Warwickshire Waste Partnership has launched Slim Your Bin which aims to reduce waste and get people recycling more, while also benefiting local community projects.

People can sign up to become ‘bin dieters’ after which they will receive three emails a week packed with tips and advice to get them recycling more and wasting less. Each week residents will learn about a new theme, such as tackling contamination and recycling food waste, and get the chance to take part in different waste cutting activities.

And the ‘dieters’ will be rewarded by earning points, with the three top dieters each month receiving a £20 voucher from the likes of Marks & Spencer and National Garden Gift Vouchers.

During the 18-month scheme, residents will also have the chance to vote for a charity or community project – Veterans Contact Point, Bo Children’s Hospital, Oral Health Foundation, Lifespace and Parkinsons UK – and every six months, the project with the most points will win a £650 donation.

Coun Jeff Clarke, chair of the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, said: “We’re excited to get this initiative underway and encourage residents to think differently about the waste they produce. Slim Your Bin not only provides a reason to reduce your waste but gives practical tips on advice on how to do so, which we hope will help our residents see not only a difference in their bins but in their pockets too.”

The scheme is being run in conjunction with specialist waste minimisation and recycling scheme provider Local Green Points.

Graham Simmonds, managing director of Local Green Points, said: “It’s great to see a waste authority embracing the benefits of joined up communications to get messages across to their residents and we’re looking forward to seeing reactions to this initiative.

“The focus on waste minimisation is one that can save councils a lot of money in gate fees so we’re confident that the scheme will have a positive impact.”
