Justice on trial at Leamington's Loft Theatre

JUSTICE is put on trial in Consent at Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

Nina Raine’s hard-hitting play, already dubbed a modern classic, was penned and first performed in 2017.

Exploring the nuances of consent and the criminal justice system during the #MeToo era, the play sees barristers and friends Ed and Tim take opposing briefs in a rape case.

The challenging topics of the play are offset by the dark humour woven throughout, but this detached and unemotional stance of the middle-class – and at times unpleasant – protagonists gradually begins to impact their lives at home.

The play has been described by reviewers as “emotionally bruising” and “awe-inspiringly eloquent”.

Director Tara L Lacey said: “The protagonists’ lives are ‘raw’ and ‘real’. Often they reflect back to you something you yourself have felt and thought you understood! They are powerfully drawn with those significant issues surrounding consent, empathy and the inadequacy of the British legal system flowing through their lives in unexpected ways. The play examines social and class divide in a way that is hard to ignore, and I have no doubt this fantastic and searching play will stay with you long after our curtain has fallen.”

Consent runs from May 3 to 13. Visit www.lofttheatrecompany.com for tickets and further details. The play contains strong language.
