Kenilworth High Street shut after fish and chip shop catches fire

A BLAZE at a fish and chip shop in Kenilworth led to part of the high street being closed on Friday (April 21).

Four fire engines were dispatched to Friends Kenilworth in Warwick Road shortly before midday.

Flames had taken hold in the ground-floor kitchen and food preparation area causing residents and workers in neighbouring buildings to be evacuated.

Warwick Road was closed between Waverley Road and Randall Road while fire crews quickly brought the flames under control and made the area safe. No one was believed to have been injured.

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11:49 am on Friday to reports of a house fire on the Warwick Road in Kenilworth. We had four appliances in attendance who, upon arrival, found a two-storey building approximately five metres by 10metres used as a fish and chip shop with a fire located in ground-floor cooking and serving area.

“Crews quickly extinguished the fire and remain on the scene dampening down. Warwickshire Police attended the scene to assist with traffic management and neighbouring residents were evacuated from properties as a safety precaution.”

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson confirmed the force had been called for road management purposes. National Express bus services 11 and 24 were diverted while part of Warwick Road was closed.
