Knitters remember women in war with colourful display

KEEN knitters have sewn up a colourful display to remember the role of women in the First World War.

Members of Whitnash WI appealed to the community for help knitting poppies to commemorates the centenary of the ending of the conflict.

The group wanted to honour the women who supported the war effort in roles such as nurses in field hospitals and in munitions factories.

And to their delight they had hundreds of knitted poppies donated which they used to decorate a refurbished phone box in the town.

Secretary Anne Steele said: “The community came up trumps. Even the Brownies donated the poppies they had made to decorate their Whitnash Fun Day float.

“We are absolutely delighted with how the phone box looked and the response we had.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this project.”
