Knitting trio donate to premature babies at Warwick Hospital

KNITTING needles have been clicking in aid of premature babies at Warwick Hospital.

Three residents of Austin Heath retirement village created 50 mini hats and 20 blankets for premature babies in the Swan Ward.

Neighbours Mary Carey, Berry Justice, and Maureen Lynch have been meeting regularly to share their love of knitting and come together to knit for important causes.

Mary has been knitting items for premature babies at Warwick Hospital for the past 20 years and her neighbour Berry has crocheted over 50 blankets for various charities. Both ladies enjoy putting their creativity to good causes, alongside Maureen who kindly donated the wool for this project.

Warwick Hospital is just 10 minutes’ drive away from Austin Heath and the ladies wanted to show their support for the local hospital’s new mothers and babies on the Swan Ward.

Over the past two years, the ladies have created 50 mini hats and 20 blankets. Premature babies often have difficulty regulating their own body temperature so knitted items help to provide warmth and comfort to babies born too early.

Mary said: “I have a long-standing connection with the Swan Ward at Warwick Hospital and was delighted when my neighbour Berry asked if she could join me in knitting and crocheting items. Maureen generously donated the wool and we all got to work. We all met at Austin Heath and love spending time together, it’s been wonderful to see how many blankets and hats we were able to create when we all came together – many hands make light work.

“I hope the items will come in handy, especially over the winter months.”
