THE LARGEST diagnostic lab in UK history will open in Tachbrook Park next July.
Leamington will be home to one of two large scale covid 19 testing labs, creating some 2,000 jobs locally. The other will be based in Scotland.
Up to 300,000 tests will be processed each day at the site – which will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Jobs at the lab are already being advertised, with roles from scientists to lab technicians, to administrative and warehouse roles available.
A pop-up walk-in test and trace centre is currently located at a car park in Court Street in Leamington’s Old Town.
Warwick District Council leader Andrew Day said: “Plans for mass testing and the imminent arrival of the vaccine give us all hope for a bright new year.
“The new mega lab will open in July at Tachbrook Park processing up to 300,000 tests a day. Recruitment begins in a couple of weeks – details of the extensive range of some 2,000 jobs are available. We’re also in discussion to gather information on the wider procurement opportunities for local companies.”
Warwickshire County Council leader Izzi Seccombe said: “The new facility will play an important role in the region’s recovery, bringing with it up to 2,000 jobs providing a much-needed boost to our economy. But it is also testament to the work that has gone into making Warwickshire such a standard bearer of technology and innovation. We have a wide range of cutting-edge enterprises based in the county and a tremendous pipeline of talent with two universities close by; to be selected once again by the government to lead such a critical piece of work, demonstrates the trust and the confidence that our reputation brings.”
