A MAN who turned and hit another man in the face with a plastic glass in a Leamington night club has been ordered to pay his victim £500 compensation after he escaped being jailed.

William McDonald pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to assaulting the other man causing him actual bodily harm during the incident in the Altoria night club in Warwick Street, Leamington.

The 37 year-old of Skiddaw, Brownsover, Rugby, was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for 18 months and was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Alan Parker also ordered him to pay £500 compensation to his victim Krzysztof Smukowski, who will be left with a scar to the bridge of his nose.

Prosecutor Anthony Cartin played a CCTV recording of the incident which took place in the night club in January.

It showed McDonald standing at the edge of the dance floor, facing towards the camera, with a glass in his hand.

He then turned and took a step towards Mr Smukowski, who was behind him, and punched him to the face while still holding the plastic glass.

There were further blows before other people stepped in to separate them.

As a result of the assault Mr Smukowski had a 1.5cm cut to the bridge of his nose which was treated by paramedics without him having to go to hospital.

His vision was blurred and he suffered from headaches for a few days afterwards, and will be left with a small scar to the bridge of his nose.

Andrew Tucker, defending, said: “This was an incident with a background.  The assault was one punch, causing an unpleasant injury.”
