Leamington Society Awards seeks to honour top builds

Leamington Editorial 19th Mar, 2018   0

THE SEARCH is on for Leamington’s best builds.

The Leamington Society Awards have been honouring good conservation and improvement projects, together with fine contemporary architecture, small and large, for more than 35 years.

And nominations are now wanted for the biennial awards which will be presented presented on July 12, after which there will be an exhibition in the library of all entries and the prize-winners.

A society spokesman said: “These awards, given every other year, set an example for good design. For instance, elegant new railings or a well restored house will encourage others around to the do the same – improving the streets, keeping Leamington looking good, and making it an even better place to live.

“Good modern architecture is encouraged, particularly if the new complements the old.

“The Award certificates are often framed and hung with pride by the winners and thereby encourage others to follow their example.”

The 2016 winners included houses and flats, park gardens and garden railings, murals and metalwork. Restaurants, shop fronts, and wildlife reserves have also previously won awards.

There is a special award, the ‘Bill Gibbons Trophy’, in honour of the late Leamington historian, for the best house – restoration or new build – by an owner-occupier.

Anyone can nominate, but the projects must be in Leamington and clearly visible to the public, and must have been completed in the past two years.

Entry forms are available from the Visitors Information Centre in the Pump Rooms, the receptions at Leamington Town Hall and Warwick District Council’s Riverside House headquarters. Forms can also be downloaded by visiting www.leamingtonsociety.org.uk. The closing date for entries is Sunday April 15.
