Leisure demand demonstrates need for country park plans say council bosses

PLANS to improve open spaces such as Tachbrook Country Park and Newbold Comyn would meet growing demand for outdoor areas and fitness activities, say council bosses.

Since the latest step in the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, parks and leisure venues have noticed a swift uptake in visitors and bookings.

And Warwick District Council says its plans to improve open spaces would meet the growing demand demonstrated in the last two weeks.

Both projects have agreed ‘masterplans’ – outline documents showing the potential opportunities the sites provide including for walking, running and cycling.

The latest to progress to a detailed stage is an application to create cycling facilities, including specially designed routes, at Newbold Comyn.

A facility is planned where people new to cycling can learn away from the roads, and enjoy using defined paths, avoiding other areas planned for nature enhancement.

The council says the free trails allow for both types of activities to co-exist. The comment follows concerns by some residents the plans would create a ‘mountain biking destination facility’, and force dog-walkers elsewhere.

Other plans focus on a new football pitch at Newbold Comyn and the creation of a new nature reserve, while an outdoor activity area is planned for later, as well as measures to enhance biodiversity and wildlife.

Spokewoman Rose Winship said: “The council aims to provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy and participate in sport, the arts and cultural activities.

“The plans for Tachbrook Country Park and Newbold Comyn will address the growing demand from across the district’s community for families to venture into outside spaces, explore new exercise ideas and allow everyone the opportunity to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and sense of well-being, now and into the future.”
