THE icy grip of winter took hold of the district this week, and Observer photographer Jon Mullis was out and about the capture the scene.

Cloudless skies, free-flowing rivers and a frosty ground made Tuesday and Wednesday two of the most picturesque mornings this year.

A rare glimpse of a kingfisher was snapped while the region’s canals shone in the bright morning sunlight as temperatures dipped to -6C in the night.

Freezing temperatures are set to continue this week and into the weekend, though highs of 5C can be expected during the day.
