Man caught with knife for third time jailed

Leamington Editorial 3rd Nov, 2021   0

A MAN who was caught with a knife in public for the third time has been jailed for eight months by a judge at Warwick Crown Court.

Paul Mott, 30, of Grange Close, Warwick, had pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in High Street, Leamington.

Prosecutor David Jackson said on September 5 the police had a call at around 10pm from someone who said that Mott had threatened to stab him.

When officers arrived, they found Mott outside a pizza take-away and, telling him he was being detained for a search, they asked if he had anything on him.

He said that in his bag he had what he described as a letter opener, which he said he was taking to a friend’s house, having collected it and other property from another friend’s home.

Mr Jackson said Mott had 35 previous convictions for 77 offences, including possessing a bladed article in 2010 and 2013, and threatening someone with a blade in 2018.

And at the time he was subject to a community order for burgling a commercial premises – but had ‘completely failed to comply with the order,’ having done just 30 minutes of the unpaid work he was supposed to do.

Richard Baker, defending, said: “He does understand he has problems which need resolving. He knows he can’t spend the rest of his life going in and out of prison.

“He knows he must get clean of drugs, and he hopes to be a drug rehabilitation worker at some stage in the future.”

Jailing Mott, Judge Anthony Potter told him: “Your record makes for depressing reading.”
