A MAN was stabbed in Leamington after refusing to hand over his phone and wallet.

The man in his 20s was walking through Ford’s Field, just off Queensway, at around 11.30pm on Tuesday (September 3) when he was approached by a man who asked him for a lighter.

He then demanded his phone and wallet and after refusing to hand them over the victim was attacked with what is understood to have been a screwdriver, and was stabbed in the stomach.

He was taken to hospital and his injury is not life threatening.

The attacker is described as an asian man, around 6ft tall and wearing a tracksuit.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attempted robbery or anyone with information.

Det sgt Pete Sherwood said: “This type of incident is fortunately a rare occurrence. It occurred behind McDonalds so it is likely there will have been members of the public in the area who may have seen the offender.

“Were you at McDonalds? Were you driving in the area at the time? Did you see a man matching this description in the park?”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or ring 0800 555 111 to speak to Crimestoppers anonymously.
