THE MUM of Wimbledon star Marcus Willis has aced trolls who criticised her son’s weight on social media.

The 26 year-old Warwick tennis coach was mocked by twitter users who called him a ‘tubbster’ and joked ‘who ate all the pies’.

But his biggest fan leapt to his defence and gave critics a dressing down.

An account belonging to the tennis star’s mother Cathy, a teacher, sarcastically tweeted: “Totally disgraced himself out there with those faultless volleys and lobs, countless aces, staging a tremendous comeback.”

Another social media user accused Willis of not ‘taking his tennis seriously’ or playing in enough tournaments and tweeted Mrs Willis’ telling her to ‘do some research’.

She replied: “He plays very few tournaments as it is very expensive to tour. I don’t need to research buddy, I’m his mother.”

She added: “Of course I’m biased. And yes he could do with losing a few pounds, but his endurance is second to none.”

And Marcus – who recently became a father for the first time – also responded to the bullies.

He said: “They have got a lot of spare time on their hands to sit and abuse people on Twitter who are in the spotlight. I’m sure they would like be in the spotlight rather than sat at home eating a bag of Wotsits.”

Fans took Marcus to their hearts at last year’s championships when he played superstar Roger Federer on Centre Court.

And this year, he and 18 year-old partner Jay Clarke have impressed after defeating the defending champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, in the Men’s Doubles.

But the pair came unstuck in their next match when they were knocked out by 16th seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic.
