THE MEAT in a supposed lamb curry served up in Warwick district could not be identified.
Officers from Warwickshire Trading Standards made the shock discovery when carrying out spot peanut allergy checks at a number of restaurants in the district.
Half of 16 lamb curries ordered and tested in Leamington, Warwick, and also in Nuneaton, contained significant traces of peanut protein, despite investigators telling staff they suffered with a peanut allergy and expected peanut free dishes.
Traces of peanuts are capable of causing severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to people who suffer from peanut allergies.
A further seven contained illegal colourings, whose use is banned in any type of curry. Some banned colourings are linked to hyperactivity, asthma and cancer.
And three of the curries contained no lamb at all – but beef instead.
And at the one unnamed restaurant in Warwick district officers found it impossible to even determine what sort of meat had been served up.
County community safety spokesman Coun John Horner was shocked at the findings.
He said: “Businesses have a responsibility to ensure the food they sell is safe to consume. I would urge business owners and their staff to check the labels of the ingredients they use and consult trading standards if they have any concerns.”
