MOTORISTS will have to allow extra time for their journeys through central Leamington after Lower Avenue was forced to close due to a gas leak.

It is not known when the road will be re-opened as repairmen continue to fix the problem.

Leamington bus routes X18, X17, 68, X68 and X77 are all being diverted.

A statement on the Stagecoach Midlands website said: “Buses will be unable to serve Morrisons, and the train Station towards Coventry.

“Buses towards Leamington will divert via Park Drive – Avenue Road – to resume normal route.

“Passengers are advised to use stops on Parish Church, Prince’s Drive & Myton Road.”

A National Grid spokesperson said: “We received a call this morning to reports of the smell of gas.

“Our workers used gas protection equipment to detect the gas and consequently we’ve had to close the road while repairs take place.”
