New 123+ bin collection service launches in Warwick and Stratford districts

Leamington Editorial 1st Aug, 2022   0

REFUSE and recycling collections across Warwick and Stratford District have changed to a new 123+ service.

The new service began on Monday (August 1) and will be delivered to residents in both districts through a joint waste contract with Biffa Waste Services Ltd.

The 123+ service will see:

– Food waste collected weekly in a food caddy

– Recycling collected fortnightly in a blue-lidded wheeled bin

– Refuse collected every three weeks in a grey bin, plus a paid for garden waste service collected fortnightly in a green bin.

Coun Moira-Ann Grainger, Warwick District Council’s (WDC) spokesperson for neighbourhood and leisure, said: “We appreciate that the new service will take a bit of getting used to for our residents. However once in the swing of things households can soon reap the benefits of an easy and efficient service which will increase their recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

“In addition, instead of contributing to greenhouse gas emissions our district can collectively generate renewable energy through the food waste collections”.

While Coun Ian Shenton, Stratford District Council’s (SDC) spokesperson for climate change, added: “With the introduction of this new service, we need everyone to play their part and support the changes. It’s important for future generations that we do as much as we can now to limit and reverse the effects of increasing temperatures caused by Greenhouse gases.

“Moving to the 123+ system is part of what we as individuals can do to help in this fight, as it should encourage increased levels of recycling and less waste, including food waste, going to landfill. I know this is a change to the current service, but I am sure that residents will adapt to this new service.

“Recycling as much as possible will help reduce waste, protect the environment and help us tackle climate change. We can put your waste materials to good use, and we have a legal requirement to recycle as much household waste as we reasonably can. It costs money to collect and dispose of the waste in your grey bin. Recycling all that you can helps to keep council tax down”.

And to help residents adjust to the new 123+ waste collection service residents are encouraged to download a new app via the App Store or Google Play by searching ‘Warwick District Council’ or ‘Stratford District Council’.

Residents can use the app to get bin collection reminders, find out what you can put in which bin or report a missed collection all in one place.
