New book focuses on part of the long history of St Mary's Church

ST Mary’s Church in Warwick is celebrating its 900th anniversary and a new book focuses on part of its long history.

‘Faire and Goodly Built – an incomplete history of St. Mary’s Warwick’, penned by Tim Clark, an historian and volunteer guide at the church, traces the story of the collegiate church until its rebuilding after the Great Fire of 1694.

Tim explains how the history of St Mary’s was intertwined with the earls of Warwick for over three centuries and how fortunes ebbed and flowed as a consequence of their ambitions and attitudes. The book also discusses the social as well as religious revolution of the 16th century.

All profits from the book will go to the restoration of St Mary’s Tower currently underway.

The book can be purchased from St Mary’s, Warwick Visitor Centre and online from the publishers Brewin Books.

The History 900 season of St Mary’s art and history talks continues with Waking the Dead: The Medieval Tombs of St Mary’s by Nigel Paul (May 4), Warwick Castle in the Civil Wars by Andrew Hopper (May 11), Reflections of British Medieval Art by Andrew Graham-Dixon (May 25).

The talks take place at St Mary’s, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available from St Mary’s, Warwick Visitor Information Centre and Leamington’s Pump Rooms, or online at warwickdc.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows or by calling 01926 334418.
