New era for historic pub

RUNNING a pub pre-Covid was tough enough – now its got even harder.

Landlords have been faced with seemingly one crisis after another, from Brexit and then lockdown and now, and arguably the greatest threat to many pubs, the cost of living crisis. Not only have energy prices sky-rocketed but potential customers are also watching the pennies like never before.

One could be forgiven for wondering why anyone in their right mind would even want to run a pub in this day and age, but fortunately they do, and the revitalised King’s Arms in Knowle, is a prime example of why.

Located on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has been welcoming guests for more than 200 years, but the 21st century customer expects 21st century comforts.

The King’s Arms has just undergone a major makeover that has given it a modern, stylish and contemporary feel, but importantly, while also maintaining its heritage.

It now offers excellent food in relaxed surroundings and at very competitive prices. It is in many ways a blueprint for all that is expected of the great traditional British country pub today.

The kitchen is in the safe hands of Head Chef Matt Hope and his team.

The menu features fresh flavours inspired by the seasons and modern world-food trends. It caters for all tastes – from premium grill dishes and indulgent desserts to healthier and lower calorie options. There is also a dedicated vegan menu.

The only difficulty diners are going to face with this menu is deciding what to opt for.

Drinks-wise, there’s an excellent cocktail menu, a wine list which offers plenty of choice without being daunting, together with a range of beers and spirits – including non-alcohol options – and soft drinks.

A mention must also go to the serving staff, who are attentive without being over-bearing, and clearly have a good knowledge of the menu, which many other establishments could do with taking heed of.

General Manager Stefan Widdowson-Wright is looking forward to a new era in the long history of The King’s Arms.

He said: “The team at The Kings Arms really are superstars – they are dedicated and hardworking, and fully invested in the remodel process; we cannot wait to welcome everyone back!

“We look forward to revealing the results of the extensive remodel to regulars and new customers alike and can’t wait to hear their feedback – we’re sure it will be fantastic.”
