Nightclub to be demolished to make way for student accommodation

Leamington Editorial 13th Dec, 2016   0

MAJOR plans for new student accommodation in Leamington have both been given the go-ahead.

Plans were passed to demolish Leamington nightclub Rio’s to make way for student accommodation in a new four storey building containing 46 bedrooms – with shared kitchens and dining rooms – set around a courtyard.

Warwick District Council planning committee had been recommended by its own officers to refuse permission for the scheme in Bedford Street behind the Parade.

But despite concerns ranging from lack of parking to the size of the development, the committee gave the green-light.

Planning committee chair Coun John Cooke told The Observer: “Having listened to the cases put forward by the council’s officers and public speakers, on this occasion the planning committee came to a different decision to our officers, as they felt the proposed development would improve this part of Bedford Street.”
