Outdoor pool reopening next year despite being set to close for good

KENILWORTH’S outdoor pool is to reopen next year despite being due to close for good this month.

The Abbey Fields pool was set to shut for the final time after the school holidays, but Warwick District Council said as work will not start on time it would reopen next summer before development begins in the autumn.

A council spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the council has agreed the outdoor pool will stay open until the end of the school summer holidays next year.”

The council plans to replace the existing outdoor pool with a second indoor pool featuring bi-fold doors which could be opened on to a sun terrace overlooking the lake.

But campaigners from group Save Kenilworth Lido have devised their own plans for a new outdoor lido.

They say it includes a plunge pool, play fountain and paddling pool.

A group spokesman said: “The proposal reconnects both the outdoor and indoor pools to their park surroundings and in particular the lake. The purpose of the design is simply to generate discussion and show the community what is possible.”

The proposal has been designed by architect and former Kenilworth resident Thomas Bates and a scale model can be seen at Kenilworth Books in Talisman Square.
