Paddling pool opens but still work to do

THE PADDLING pool at St Nicholas Park in Warwick is now open for the summer.

Although the popular attraction requires renovation, following repair work including an anti-slip surface, Warwick District Council has authorised this season’s opening with the added advice for all pool users to wear aqua shoes for their comfort.

At the same time WDC is reminding residents Leamington’s Victoria Park pool will remain closed this summer pending the start of a major upgrade and refurbishment.

This will include new play features such as jets and fountains, improvements to the surrounds with benches and shaded areas, as well as essential repairs to the substructure and pipework.

The paddling pools are a significant cost to WDC on an annual basis and the cost of the additional repairs on top of the annual maintenance cost is increasingly prohibitive.

In 2021 maintenance cost for both pools was £53,257. In 2023 it was £90,817.

WDC neighbourhood service spokesman Will Roberts said: “Our paddling pools are extremely important offering fun and excitement for thousands of local families and visitors to St Nicholas Park and Victoria Park every summer.

“To secure the long-term future of these facilities we need to undertake a

substantial programme of works extending far beyond the regular repairs and

maintenance which take place during the winter months.

“We are pleased that we have been able to reopen the St Nicholas Park pool

again for this season but want to advise visitors that it will be busier than usual

especially at peak times and during warmer weather.”
