Pair arrested after two Warwickshire women conned out of over £60k

ARRESTS have been made after two Warwickshire women were conned out of thousands of pounds.

Two 19-year-olds, a man and a woman, were both arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. The man’s arrest was in connection with a phone call to a Southam resident, in September, when a woman in her 70s was conned out of £10,500 by a fraudster claiming to be from the police.

The woman’s arrest related to an incident in Rugby, in February, where a woman in her 50s was conned out of £20,000 by fraudsters claiming to be from the victim’s bank.

Both were arrested on Thursday April 1 and later released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Detective Constable Stuart Clasper from Warwickshire Police’s Economic Crime unit said: “We continue to investigate these despicable crimes where criminals often prey on the elderly and vulnerable.

“I would like to take the opportunity to remind people they will never, under any circumstances, be contacted by the police or their bank asking them to transfer or withdraw money. If you receive such a call it is a fraud and you should report it to Action Fraud or if a crime is in progress call 999.”

Anyone with information that could help detectives with their investigations into telephone fraud should call 101. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
