Parliamentary candidates focused on international issues at Warwick District United Nations Association husting

INTERNATIONAL issues were the focus for candidates in the race to become the next Warwick & Leamington MP at a weekend husting.

Warwick District United Nations Association held a Question Time debate aat Leamington’s Baptist Church hall on Saturday.

Candidates included Conservative Jack Rankin, Liberal Democrat Louis Adam, Labour’s Matt Western Labour and Jonathan Chilvers of the Green Party.

Questions covered climate change, human rights, the Gaza and Palestine issue, international development and aid and poverty, problems of refugees and displaced people, UK government defence procurement to the Saudis and responsible business.

Association chair Gian Clare, who also chaired the detae, said: “The feedback received from the audience was that all our four candidates were extremely capable and interacted with each other with respect and consideration – they were all excellent.

“It was agreed that questions relating to Brexit and domestic issues i.e. NHS would not be raised. Clearly, the debates around the UK`s decision to leave the European Union is and will continue to play a significant part in the national conversation. However, the local UN Association did not wish Brexit and domestic issues i.e. NHS to dominate the meeting.”
