People advised to visit GP if suffering lung cancer symptoms

THOSE suffering from symptoms of lung cancer are being encouraged to visit their GP.

Healthcare bosses from South Warwickshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are encouraging people to become more aware of the main symptoms during November, which is lung cancer awareness month.

Those suffering with a persistent cough, coughing up blood, breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, tiredness or an ache or pain when breathing or coughing are advised to see their doctor.

Lung cancer doesn’t often cause noticeable symptoms until it has spread through the lungs or into other parts of the body. This means the outlook for the condition isn’t as good as many other types of cancer.

But survival rates can vary widely, depending on how far the cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis. Catching it early can make a big difference.

CCG chairman Dr David Spraggett said: “A cough that has lasted three weeks or more can also be a sign of lung cancer, which is why it’s so important to see your doctor. Early detection makes it easier to treat. Seeing your doctor could save your life.”
