VETS are urging pet owners to take advantage of a free cat neutering scheme.
Avonvale Veterinary Centres is working with Cats Protection, which rescues and re-homes unwanted cats and promotes responsible cat ownership, on the scheme, which runs until February 28 at its surgeries in Leamington, Warwick, Stratford, Wellesbourne, Southam and Kenilworth.
The programme, funded by Cats Protection, aims to tackle the problem of unwanted and stray cats across Warwickshire and Avonvale is calling on pensioners and those on low incomes or state benefits, in particular, to take advantage.
Kieran O’Halloran, senior vet at Avonvale’s Kenilworth surgery, said neutering helps to play a vital role in controlling the number of unwanted cats across the county.
He said: “Female cats can become pregnant from the age of six months and can go on to breed for eight years. With up to three litters a year, each with an average of six kittens, that’s 144 kittens in their lifetime.
Once neutered, benefits to cats include preventing some cancers, helping to stop the spread of FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), as well as reducing spraying, fighting and straying.
