PICTURE SPECIAL - The Victorian Christmas market sets up stall in Warwick

THE FESTIVE season wouldn’t be complete without the hugely popular Victorian Evening in Warwick – and fortunately there wasn’t a bah humbug in sight.

The town stepped back in time to the Charles Dickens’ era complete with the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian Christmas on Thursday (November 24).

There was a Victorian market in the Market Square. Visitors could browse the crafts, gift and community stalls, with traders in traditional costumes.

The era-themed rides started in time for the kids finishing school, while the lights were switched on at 7pm by Warwick Mayor, Coun Parminder Singh Birdi and Commonwealth Games boxing gold medallist Lewis Williams.

Festive food and drink was on sale. And, in keeping with tradition, the Christmas Tree Festival took place in St Mary’s Church.

While visitors were also encouraged to get into the 19th century spirit with the annual competition for the best dressed Victorian.

Warwick District Council’s arts and economy spokesman Coun Liam Bartlett said: “The Victorian Evening is a staple event in Warwick’s calendar which brings thousands of people into the town. It provides a great atmosphere, helps to promote the local businesses, and kicks off the festive season in true Victorian style.”
