PLANS for the manufacturing sector post-Brexit have been slammed by MP Matt Western who claims they could spell ‘disaster’ for the area.

The Warwick and Leamington Labour MP hit out at government plans to abandon alignment with EU regulations following Brexit.

Organisations including the Unite union have warned it will lead to significant job losses, while industry leaders such as the Confederation of British Industry say it will cost the automotive industry billions of pounds.

Mr Western called abandoning EU regulations when the UK leaves the European Union on January 31 ‘unnecessary and destructive’.

He told the Observer: “If the Prime Minister and his government were serious in what they say about supporting north and midlands communities – that rely on a strong manufacturing sector – he must change tack on regulatory alignment. If he doesn’t, it will spell disaster for areas like mine, and Mr Johnson will have to be held accountable for his false support.

“My message is simple, we must stop Brexit from destroying UK manufacturing.”
