Police to crackdown on Heavy Goods Vehicle thefts during festive season

POLICE are targeting thieves who break into HGVs parked up in Warwickshire.

Christmas can provide rich pickings for thieves with more goods being transported on motorways and major A roads than at any other time of year. HGVs often park up overnight in Warwickshire, leaving both the driver and vehicle vulnerable to theft.

Operation Axle will see patrols around lay-bys, motorway service areas, truck stops, and other areas stepped up in the evenings and early mornings during December and January.

Warwickshire Police hope the operation will deter potential thieves, reduce the number of thefts and reassure lorry drivers.

Det Insp Steven Fitzpatrick said: “The festive period can be a wonderful time of year but it is also one when HGVs and their drivers can become targets for opportunist thieves.

“We will be doing all we can to ensure that is not the case by increasing our presence in areas where HGV drivers typically spend time overnight.

“Our officers will be carrying out a number of patrols over the coming weeks in a bid to prevent thefts from occurring as well reassuring drivers and providing crime prevention advice.

“We hope Operation Axle will help keep the festive season safe for all those who are using our roads.”
