Residents asked for Commonwealth connection stories ahead of games

THE COUNTDOWN to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is on and Warwick District Council is looking for local connections to Commonwealth countries.

Residents are invited to share their own memories, anecdotes and photos from these countries.

And the council will share the contributions across social media in the build up to next year’s games when the district hosts the Lawn and Para Lawn Bowls at Victoria Park in Leamington and the start and finish of the Road Cycling Races in Warwick’s St Nicholas Park.

Be it a short story, a personal experience, or a link to a local community, it is hoped there will be a local connection to every Commonwealth country.

The council will be also taking social media followers on a whistle-stop digital tour of each of the 54 countries and will be sharing some fun facts and figures from the well-known and lesser-known countries, hoping to inspire connections.

WDC culture spokesman Liam Bartlett said: “As we take the people of Warwick district on a tour of the Commonwealth through our Commonwealth Connections project, we want to hear your interesting stories and build up our knowledge of the 54 countries as we prepare to welcome visitors and spectators to the district during next year’s games.”

Connections do not have to be sports related – it could be work-related or to a charitable or community project or a story from friends or family living in one of the countries.

Commonwealth connections can be submitted via the council website and should be a maximum of 500 words. Videos must be no more than two minutes long. Photos and illustrations can also be included in this form.

Stories can also be shared on social media using the hashtag #WDCCommonwealthConnections.

Visit www.warwickdc.gov.uk/commonwealthconnections for information and to submit.
