Residents call for Stagecoach to revert back to 'safer' route

Leamington Editorial 17th Apr, 2019   0

RESIDENTS in Leamington are calling for a Stagecoach bus service to revert back to a ‘safer’ route.

Householders in St Mary’s Road say the number 67 route is not suitable for their road and puts pedestrians at risk and also obstructs other traffic.

A 75-strong petition has been handed in to bosses calling for the buses to instead use Sydenham Drive, the route it previously ran on.

A spokeswoman for St Mary’s Residents Association said: “We call upon Stagecoach to return to the original bus route using Sydenham Drive, restoring safety, reducing noise and pollution and allow traffic to flow freely up and down St Mary’s Road.”

But Stagecoach says it has no plans to change the service which is similar to others across the county.

A spokesman said: “Bus travel is a vital part of our countries infrastructure and we are dismayed to see a group of residents take such a negative approach to a public service.

“The routing has previously been discussed with Warwickshire County Council and the road is similar to many of those we operate on throughout the country and is not unique.

“We need to ensure we run a reliable service for our customers and using St Mary’s Road allows us to achieve this.”
