Residents encouraged to reduce waste

Leamington Editorial 5th Jul, 2018   0

THE SLIM-your-bin campaign is returning to Warwickshire to encourage residents to reduce their waste.

Warwickshire County Council has extended its contract with behaviour change experts Local Green Points to deliver the campaign for another year.

Since its launch in November 2016, over 560 residents have signed up and the campaign has received an award for its work to increase recycling in the county.

‘Bin dieters’ take part in a number bin slimming activities to earn points and win prizes including a £20 voucher to spend on a choice of eco-friendly products.

At the end of each year the community with the most points receives £650 to donate to a local charity.

Over a year, the campaign has resulted in an estimated 5,000kg of food waste diverted from rubbish to recycling and 24,000 pieces of junk mail avoided.

And in addition, Warwickshire Recycling Champion of the Year – launched by Local Green Points in October – saw five recycling champions from each of Warwickshire’s districts and boroughs receive prizes including a two-night staycation at Coombe Abbey Hotel.

County environmental spokesperson Coun David Reilly said: “Slim Your Bin is a fun and exciting and way to engage residents in recycling and reward them for all their hard work. It’s fantastic to see so many local residents getting involved.”
