THE ROTARY Clubs of Kenilworth and Leamington are urging others in the region to join them in the fight against hunger.

Lawyers from Coventry-based Band Hatton Button have teamed up with Rotary for the Tackling Hunger event.

At least 400 volunteers are needed to help pack 100,000 meals for families overseas in one day.

Food bank collections will also be made on the day for UK families.

Schools, youth groups, community groups and local businesses are being urged to take part on Sunday, April 22 at King Henry VIII School on Warwick Road.

An on-going fundraising drive is also taking place to raise £25,000 for the meal ingredients ahead of the event.

Around £8,000 has already been raised.

The Tackling Hunger event is being organised by the Rotary clubs of Kenilworth and Leamington along with project partners Rise Against Hunger, The Trussell Trust and King Henry VIII School.

Project management is being provided free of charge by local consultancy firm, Strategic Change Partners Ltd.

Jonathan Miller, president of the Rotary Club of Kenilworth, is co-leading on the event.

He said: “Community challenges such as this are what the rotary club is all about – doing what we can to help not just our local communities, but those further afield too.

“Our partner the Trussell Trust has revealed that in the UK last year they provided nearly 1.2 million food parcels to families in this country.

“This hunger problem is highlighted further by figures from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, there are approximately 815 million people across the globe who do not have access to the food needed to live a healthy life.

“This needs to change, and we are calling on as many people to help in any way they can.

“This might be individuals personally fundraising and taking time out to pack meals, or if businesses want to sponsor a table or prizes or provide funding for meal pack ingredients, that would be welcome.
