BONFIRE night went with a bang across the district, but one Kenilworth schoolgirl made sure it was safety first.

Park Hill Junior School pupil Lauren Wallace scooped the top prize in the Warwick District Firework Safety Poem Competition.

The eight year-old’s poem ‘Enchanted Firework Safety’ cinched the top spot from 1,000 entries.

Her poem warns about the dangers of fireworks while still enjoying them and will be used in next year’s firework safety campaign.

Lauren also won a £25 book token and visit to the fire station for her efforts in the competition was run by Warwickshire Fire and Trading Standards services.

Enchanted Firework Safety:

An enchanted crackle sparkles by,

swiftly lands on the moon lit sky.

Make sure you stand well back

so the twisting embers do not attack.

Don’t expect to light a fire

stand well back as the flames grow higher.

Keep a bucket near in hand,

exploding bonfires are a crackling band,

always remember to have fun,

but to be safe, don’t run.
