SAM Simkin is celebrating after being awarded the prestigious Mary Dormer Harris Memorial Bursary, a legacy from the Warwickshire historian.

Each year, the trustees of the bursary fund invite applications from sixth formers studying at the 15 schools in Warwickshire.

It exists to help and encourage young students in the study of history, drama and music, subjects that Ms Dormer Harris was particularly passionate about.

Recipients are chosen not only on their academic attainment, but also on their character and promise, and their applications are supported by references from their school.

Sam, a student at King’s Highin Warwick, said: “Mary Dormer Harris was an exceptionally strong woman. To have been such an ardent defender of female suffrage and workers’ emancipation when such ideas were condemned, is truly admirable. Being awarded this bursary in her name is a huge honour, and will encourage me to continue fighting for greater equality and freedom for individuals globally.”

Sam will be formally awarded with the bursary once school reopens.
